Two held with 84 sea turtle eggs

The Wildlife Department recently arrested two persons who had sea turtle eggs in their possession. The suspects had extracted the eggs after destroying a sea turtle nest in the Ambalantota coastal area.

There have been 84 eggs in their possession. A sea turtle egg is sold in the black market for about Rs. 30 – 40. During a raid conducted in the area, Officers attached to Mirissa and Kalapatiya ranges of the Wildlife Department took the suspects into their custody. The eggs are kept in possession of the Wildlife Department under the watch of a sea turtle conservation project.

Meanwhile, the Wildlife Department successfully arrested another person who has been involved in a turtle racket. The said suspect, a resident of Thunmodara area, has been selling turtles for a very long time. He was arrested by the Western Province Raid Unit together with the Muthurajawela Regional Office of the Wildlife Department.

The suspect was produced before the Wattala Magistrate.
