‘Sapiri Gamak’ conducts 37,862 projects islandwide

Under the ‘Sapiri Gamak’ (prosperous village) programme, 37,862 development projects worth Rs. 27,920 million are being implemented islandwide by the Divisional Secretaries under the supervision of District Secretaries, a media release issued by the Ministry of Finance said.

As per the policy manifesto of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ (Rata Hadana Saubhagyaye Dekma), its main objective is to develop the country and establish a public-centred economy through the development of rural areas.

Accordingly, the government’s aim is to convert the entire country into one development zone fully fledged with all facilities, connecting the village and the city together. In achieving the above expectations, ‘Sapiri Gamak’, the community-based development programme is being implemented, covering the entire country under the guidance of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Through this programme, projects for the development of roads, projects to uplift infrastructure facilities required for the agricultural sector, projects to uplift economy at the rural level, projects for the provision of facilities required for rural health, and projects to develop education by providing electricity, water and sanitary facilities for schools and other priority physical infrastructure facilities that are directly attributed to the development of rural economy will be implemented.

The main objective of this programme is the improvement of livelihood through the development of rural facilities in order to uplift the socio-economic condition of the rural economy.

It especially focuses on the development projects that facilitate to improve income pathways of low-income people and also to generate self employments among youth and women.

Under this programme, Rs. two million will be spent to implement development projects at each Grama Niladhari Division, covering 14,021 Grama Niladhari divisions in the country. A committee which comprises senior management level officials of the Ministry of Finance, Economy and Policy Development has been appointed for supervision and to give guidance for the implementation of this programme.
