Education Minister proposes Pirivena Education Board

Separate department for pirivena sector

Pirivena education occupies a special place in the field of education in this country. Therefore, it should not be limited to a mere unit. A strong administrative structure should be evolved to ensure its continuity of posts in the sector. I would request the Pirivena Education Board to provide its recommendations towards making the pirivena sector a separate department, Education, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said.

The Minister made these views in a ceremony held at the Education Ministry to mark the granting of new parivenacharya posts to pirivenas on March 1.

This process of granting parivenacharya posts which had stalled for some time was revived by Minister Alahapperuma under the guidance of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Minister said the Pirivena sector had a vital role to play on behalf of non-Sinhala Buddhists living in the international world. It also had a responsibility to transmit the Buddhist message to the world community equipped with modern technology.

A batch of 305 parivenacharya recruits representing both bhikkhus and laymen received appointment letters at this ceremony. Maligakanda Vidyodaya Parivenadhipati, Chief Sanghanayake Thera of Southern and Western Provinces and member of the Pirivena Education Board Ven. Dr. Balangoda Sobhitha Thera, Piriven Director Ven. Watinapaha Somananda Thera, Education State Secretary Ranjith Chandrasekera, Education Services Additional Secretary Hemantha Prematilleke and other officials were also present on the occasion.
