Seven students remanded till March 16

The seven students who were arrested in connection with gang-raping a 13-year-old girl, were ordered to remanded till March 16 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochana Abewickrama, yesterday.

The magistrate observed that the victim has identified the seven students through an identity parade. He added that the girl had been repeatedly raped by the students between February and September, 2019.

According to the medical report submitted by the Judicial Medical Officer, he has confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted by several people. “During the identification parade, the victim informed the magistrate that she has had a relationship with the first suspect in the case,” the magistrate observed.

The National Child Protection Authority informed court that first suspect sent his girlfriend’s mobile number and her nude photographs to his friends through WhatsApp. The counsels who appeared on behalf of the suspects pleaded their clients be granted on bail.

The counsels also stated that the suspects are scheduled to participate for the Advance Level Examination in August.

The magistrate, however, rejected the bail applications.
