Ranil, Akila absent at ‘Samagi Jana Balawegaya’ launch

Fifteen political parties, and over 30 civil society groups and Trade Unions yesterday officially joined with the ‘Samagi Jana Balawegaya’ (SJB) led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The official signing ceremony was held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre in Colombo with the participation of a large crowd. However, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam  and the group supporting Wickremesinghe did not attend the ceremony.

The new alliance was launched despite that there was an impasse over its symbol. The Wickremesinghe camp and the Premadasa camp had not arrived at an agreement on the symbol even as at yesterday.

SJB Leader and Opposition Leader Premadasa, addressing the gathering, said the occasion would mark the beginning of a people’s revolution for a new people-friendly and progressive political democracy.

“The SJB is a new movement striving for a positive and meaningful change for the common good of the people. It is a long term programme continuing beyond the General Elections. The set up of SJB was approved by the UNP Working Committee. We have taken a step forward and we are not ready to take it back. I invite all UNPers to join with the SJB and I promise to protect them all,” he stressed.

Comparing the SJB to the ‘Purawesi Peramuna’ founded by his late father R.Premadasa, he said the intentions of founding both of them were similar.

“One or a few individuals cannot claim ownership to any political party. All of you are the owners of the SJB and there is no room for dictatorship in this new party. We will put an end to the period where few cronies decided the national agenda,” he remarked.

He said the SJB is for an economic policy based on inclusive growth and shared prosperity. He said the SJB believes that Buddhism should be given priority in the country, but all other ethnic and religious groups must be treated equally.

The political parties that joined with the SJB include ‘Jathika Hela Urumaya, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Tamil Progressive Alliance, All Ceylon Makkal Congress, United Left Front, Social Democratic Party, UP-Country People’s Front, Democratic Left Front, Organization to protect the SLFP, ‘Vama Sahayogitha Peramuna’, ‘Ape Janabala Pakshaya’, ‘Ape Parapura Pakshaya’, ‘Eksath Janatha Peramuna’, ‘Nava Kandurata Deshapalana Ekamuthuwa’, and ‘Eksath Jathika Nidahas Peramuna’.

SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara also spoke.
