‘Only NPP can usher development in Uva’

The Uva Province is rich in natural resources, but it is the poorest province in Sri Lanka because the appointed leaders did not develop it properly, said Samantha Vidyaratne, JVP Badulla district MP.

He was speaking at the Badulla District convention of National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, held under the leadership of JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake at Senanayake Park in Badulla on Saturday.

The people who were displaced by the Uma Oya Project have not yet obtained alternative lands. As a result of this project, 23 temples and 22 houses were damaged, he said.

The previous governments could not solve the elephant–human conflict. Thirty-six people have died as a result of this problem in the last few months in the Uva Province. The majority of victims were in Mahiyangana, Rideemaaliyadda and Kandaketiya areas. Elephants have been destroying the harvests of the farmers, Vidyaratne said.

“British rulers had taken steps to develop the Uva region by putting up tea factories and constructing the railway line to Badulla. They also built hospitals, the railway station, and urban council, court and kachcheri buildings in Badulla town. But local rulers removed the railway line between Colombo and Opanayake and Nanuoya and Nuwara Eliya. They also closed a number of tea factories. They did not initiate any industry in the Badulla area.”

“When the farmers supply potatoes to the markets, they find that the government has imported potatoes. To put the country onto the real development track, people must offer a chance to the NPP because it is the only alliance that can face any challenge. So I appeal to the voters to cast their votes in favour of the National People’s Power alliance,” Vidyaratne said.
