Two arrested for engaging in illegal fishing

The Navy, during an operation in the sea area off Iranativu on Sunday, apprehended two persons who were engaging in fishing using unauthorized fishing nets, the Navy media unit said.

A group of naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command patrolling in the sea area of Iranativu arrested the two suspects for using unauthorized fishing nets to catch fish.

Along with the suspects, one dinghy, eight unauthorized fishing nets, one outboard motor and several other fishing gear were taken into naval custody. The apprehended persons have been identified as residents of Pooneryn, aged 29 and 38.

The Navy has been conducting regular patrols in island’s waters for the prevention of illegal fishing practices. The accused along with the seized items were handed over to the Kilinochchi Fisheries Inspector for further investigation, the Navy media unit issuing a communiqué said..
