Customs seizes stock of foreign cigarettes

A Sri Lankan man and Indian woman have been nabbed by the Customs with a stock of foreign cigarettes at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on February 29.

The Sri Lankan (44) is a resident of Kotahena, Colombo and the Indian is said to be his wife, Customs sources said.

They have arrived here from Dubai on SriLankan flight U.L. 226 about 4.15 a.m. About 242 cartons of 48,000 foreign cigarettes worth Rs. 2,420,000 were found in their luggage, the sources said.

They have been fined Rs. 2 lakhs each and the stock of cigarettes has been confiscated. Investigations are continuing, the sources further said.
