Fire at garbage site affects 1,000 families in Kurunegala

Over 1,000 families were affected by a fire that was erupted in the garbage dumping site in Kurunegala recently. Thick smoke of the fire has caused breathing difficulties for children and adults in the close by areas.

The Firefighting Division of the Kurunegala Municipal Council (MC) together with the Negambo Firefighting Squad responded to the fire immediately. Later on, Sri Lanka Air Force Camp in Hingurakgoda deployed two helicopters to stop the fire as there was a threat to the Sundarapola Reserve if the fire spread.

The fire was controlled from spreading; however it has not been completely subdued.

Around 30 officers of the Kurunegala MC and the Kurunegala Divisional Secretariat have cleared the area between the reserve and the land where the fire erupted.
