Further drop in vegetable prices

Vegetable prices have dropped further at the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre (DDEC) on Saturday evening.

DDEC Union Chairman Channa Eraula said vegetable prices will drop further as farmers have received bumper harvest.

The wholesale price of radish and cucumber are less than Rs.10 per kg. Prices of beet root, pea, pumpkins, and cabbages have dropped to Rs.40 and Rs. 100 per kilo. Beans, tomatoes, raw chili, curry chili, carrot, leeks are available at Rs.100 and Rs.150 per kilo.

The price of a kg of imported big onions is Rs.110 and Rs.120 while. Red onions is available at Rs.150 and Rs.200 per kilo. A kg of imported potatoes is between Rs.85 and Rs.90.

Farmers at the centre said they cannot have a proper price for their produce at the centre.

They say they will have to abandon farming vegetables if the price drop continues.
