French family touring here injured in accident

A French family touring Sri Lanka sustained injuries in an accident last afternoon on the Kurunegala-Dambulla main road in in Galewela, Omaragolla Pallama.

The vehicle they were travelling in had veered off the road and crashed into a tree resulting in the mother, father, son and daughter, the driver and guide sustaining serious injuries.

They were rushed to the Dambulla base hospital, police said.

The accident had occurred when the French family was on their way to a hotel in Sigiriya from the Katunayake Airport.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, the tour guide and the three members of the French family are in critical condition. However, one family member had sustained minor injuries and is not serious, according to hospital sources.

The Galewela Police said that the van had been speeding and the driver had lost control of the vehicle and hit a barbed wired fence and crashed into the tree.

The French family had arrived in Sri Lanka last afternoon on a holiday for a few days.

Those in serious condition are aged 54, 56, 21 and 23.

The police suspect that the driver of the van would have fallen asleep at the wheel resulting in the crash.

Galewela Police are conducting further investigations.
