Twenty two undergrads further remanded

The 22 university students who were arrested for violating a court order and stage a protest opposite the University Grants Commission (UGC) were ordered to be further remanded until March 16 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne yesterday.

Twenty-two university students including two monks were arrested for staging a protest opposite the University Grants Commission (UGC) in violation of a court order obtained by the Police over acts of obstruction of the public.

The Convenor of the Inter University Students Federation Ven. Rathkarawwe Jinarathana Thera and another monk are among those arrested.

Police Legal Division Director DIG Ajith Rohana who appeared on behalf of the prosecution informed court that he requested the university students to leave the premises, while informing them that a court order had also been issued with regard to this incident.

DIG Ajith Rohana also pointed out that the suspects have committed offenses under Section 332 of the Penal Code,Police Ordinance and Judicature Act. The DIG also stated that the Cinnamon Gardens Police recorded three statements regarding the incident. SSP Attorney Ruwan Gunasekara appeared before the court.

DIG Ajith Rohana further told court that one of the Police officers had pasted the order issued by this on a hut which they have used. However, the suspects had thrown away the court order which stated about the banning of the conduct of a Satyagraha opposite the Higher Education Ministry on Saturday. Lawyers stated that their clients are scheduled to sit for an exam on March 10 and further remanding them would result in a severe loss to them and therefore requested the court to grant bail. After considering the submissions, the Magistrate rejected the bail applications made by the Defense Counsel and stated that the violation of a court order is a serious matter.

The 22 university students arrested for protesting opposite the University Grants Commission (UGC) were remanded till March 16.

The order was issued by the Colombo Magistrate when the group of students were produced before the court.
