Sri Lanka should try to woo high spending tourists to visit Sri Lanka as there is an emerging demand for this segment founder Chairman ‘The Heritage Collection’ Kevin Pereira said.

He said that Sri Lanka has a stunning collection of boutique hotels and Estate heritage bungalows that currently charge average USD 200 per day which is twice the amount of beach hotels.

“This is because these high end hotels offer a more luxurious and personalized product and an ambience of quietness which is highly appreciated by foreigners. This is why they are ready to pay a premium price and this market segment should be promoted more aggressively.”

Born in Sri Lanka, Kevin Pereira migrated to Australia became an accountant. After obtaining a job at a hotel he fell in love with the travel trade and came back to Sri Lanka after 50 years to invest on heritage hotels.

“My first venture was Nisala Arana in Bentota where I converted an old house in to luxury mansion with four rooms.”

He recalled that during this time Boutique hotels were not heard of in Sri Lanka and many advised him not to invest in them. “But I took a bold decision and today I have two boutique hotels, Nisala Arana and The Cottage, Bentota.”

A Bawa inspired garden boutique hotel near the Bentota beach, Nisala Arana has 7- luxury bedrooms with freshwater swimming pool. “This is perfect for family holidays, destination weddings and yoga/wellness retreats and the boutique hotel can comfortably accommodate up to 14-18 Guests.”

In addition I then invested in Highgrove Estate, Labookellie, Nuwara Eliya to offer a tea experience to travelers and this too is a success. “The three roomed old Bungalow has been carefully restored to its original form with working fireplaces, beautiful garden. In a bid to offer ‘comfy’ accommodation I then invested in a Designer 3-Bedroom Boutique Hotel, Mount Lodge, in Hotel Road Mount Lavinia.”

“My other investment was The Cottage Bentota, Bentota, a Private 3-Bedroom Villa with Plunge and Tanning Pool near the Bentota Beach.”

He said that having small properties is easy to manage and also could give better personalized attention to guests.

General Manger, Benjamin Perera said that today their main market is through on line and through travel agents.
