Opening up a new avenue of generating foreign income to Sri Lanka, and setting benchmarks in the Elderly Care segment, Western Care Homes, managed by Western Health Care Pvt Ltd will be opening up Sri Lanka’s first purposely built elderly care village, in Nugegoda next year.

Founder Chairperson, Dr. Nilmini Withana, said that she has already acquired one acre land in Nugegoda for the project which would be a BOI approved venture. “We also hope to partner a Norwegian investor and other foreign partners for this project estimated to Rs. 500 million investments.”

She explained that the proposed ‘Senior Citizens Village and Wellness Centre’ would have a five storeyed complex built to international elderly health care standards offering 140 rooms and 20 luxury villa type individual units. In a bid to offer more luxury the ‘Senior Citizens Village and Wellness Centre’ will have swimming pool, Club House, Gym, large garden, library, tennis court, medical Centre and other facilities to offer a homely atmosphere. Each unit would have mini kitchen, toilet, living and bed room, hot and cold water, Cable TV; free Wifi and all other modern day living and safety requirements.

She said that with more youth moving out of the country for higher education and settling overseas and also with the increase of ageing population in Sri Lanka, the demand for Aged care is growing. “This why we are re-investing to offer more accommodation to senior citizens. Our target is middle, upper middle and foreign senior citizens.”

“We are also planning to build a second Centre in Kalubowila this year to accommodate 40 senior citizens.”

She said they through their care gver training center, affiliated to a UK institute which is already producing care givers for US and European markets, they will also start recruiting and training 70 staff requite for these two Centers.

Senior citizens both local and foreign could purchase Villas outright/installment plans or even could be rented.

She said that they expect more than 80% of the occupants to be forefingers as surveys have showed that most of the retired Europeans and UK residents like to live in Sri Lanka.

“While offering comfortable living our medical team will also look in to residents Age-related Diseases and offer them treatment and addressing other Psychological issues.

Dr. Nilmini Withana, who was working for a leading private hospital for 15 years also worked in Singapore hospital and gained knowledge and experience in Aged Care.

With this experience behind me I stared Western Health Care in 2012 in Kirilapona to offer quality elderly care then expanded to Bambalapitiya, Pamankada, Kalubowila ,Kohuwala and today we have over 70 inmates including foreigners.

Withana’s an ardent Lions Club member, has won more than 60 awards and accolades in recognition of her very many acts of social service including the Nelson Mandela peace Award in 2019. (SS)
