ITB Berlin cancelled

ITB Berlin 2020 scheduled to take place March 4 – 8 has been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, the event organizers reported. The annual travel industry event, was expected to draw more than 10,000 exhibitors from over 180 countries including Sri Lanka.

“Due to the increasing spread of the coronavirus, COVID-19, the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Economics have decided to cancel ITB Berlin,” the event organizers wrote in a statement announcing the decision.

Sri Lanka too was fielding a 120 member team for the event comprising 68 travel based companies including officers from Sri Lanka Tourism and the Ministry. “However as for the Sri Lanka Tourism we did not have a major cancellation cost since we had not booked our air tickets,” an official from the Sri Lanka Tourism said.

This official also said that the ITB organizers have indicated that the fees that was paid to reserve the Sri Lanka stand at the ITB venue could be utilized for the next ITB. However a lot of Sri Lanka travel companies are blaming the ITB organizers for not announcing the cancellation earlier.

The health authority responsible for Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf of Berlin increased the requirements for the event to take place; among other things, the new requirements would have required all event attendees to prove that they have not come from defined coronavirus risk areas or have had contact with a person from the risk areas. The event organizers said that they would not be able to implement these requirements.
