Corrupt deal makers must be arrested - UNP MP

The Airbus deal and other big-time bribery crooks should be arrested at least now to prove that there are no ‘deals’, UNP MP S.M. Marikkar said.

Addressing a press briefing at Opposition Leader’s office yesterday Marikkar said the US$ 2 million

Airbus bribery transaction went undetected as the SriLankan Airlines Commission of Inquiry and the Bribery Commission did not function effectively during the previous UNF regime.

“If we could have handled the corruption cases methodically instead of letting them being put off by political deals, we would not have been defeated at the presidential election. Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has a strong team who are not associated with deals to move forward with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. We seek that the public will act wise in the upcoming General election,” he said.

“The Norochcholai power plant is facing breakdowns and the Minster is plotting to purchase power from the private sector. Minister Mahinda Amaraweera was also in our cabinet during that time. He has no ethical right to claim that the Norochcholai plant is facing break downs due to the faults of the previous government as he also represented the national government,”he said.

UNP MP Ajith P. Perera said that if the current government approved the report of the B.C. Perera committee which was approved by the previous cabinet as a solution for the salary anomalies of teachers, the sick leave campaign to be held today (26) could have been halted. “Unresolved issues spanning the past 20 years have made the teachers to launch a sick leave campaign today. If the government can follow the B.C Perera report which was approved by the previous government, this issue can be solved,” he said.
