Rs.500 million fraud at NHDA: nine interdicted

A corruption case involving irregular land deals worth over Rs. 500 million has been detected in a district branch office of the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA). Authority Chairman Renuka Perera yesterday disclosed that nine officials of the NHDA’s Hambantota district branch office had been interdicted in connection with this case.

The corruption case was revealed by an internal audit carried out at the branch office, the chairman told the Daily News. Following this detection, nine officials, including the Assistant Accountant of the NHDA’s Hambantota branch have been interdicted.

The Internal Auditor of the NHDA’S district branch has lodged a complaint on this matter with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and investigations are being carried out.

The NHDA Chairman said that investigations were being made into purchases of land parcels at higher prices in the Hambantota district through the Hambantota district branch of the NHDA.
