Trees to be planted along expressways

The government has embarked on a national programme to plant trees on either sides of expressways throughout the country under the theme of Hadena Ratata - Wadena Gasak (Growing Tree for Growing Country).

Accordingly, the Expressway Operation Maintenance and Management Division of the Road Development Authority has targetted to plant 100,000 saplings along the Southern expressway from Kadawatha to Godagama in Matara.

Meanwhile, a programme to plant 300 kubuk and mudilla saplings on either sides of the Southern Expressway from Kottawa to Kahathuduwa commenced recently under the patronage of Roads and Highways and Ports and Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando to mark the country’s 72nd Independence anniversary.

Under this programme, 80,000 saplings of mee, kubuk, mudilla ,karamba, maila and burutha have already been planted on either side of the Southern Expressway. Trees will be planted on OCH from Kadawatha to Kerawalapitiya and the extension of the Southern Expressway from Godagama to Hambantota.

Tress will also be planted along all national, provincial and rural roads countrywide.
