Former Homagama District Judge sentenced to 16 years RI

Former Homagama District Judge Sunil Abeysinghe and his personal security officer who were found guilty for soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs.300,000 were yesterday sentenced to 16 years Rigorous Imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

The two accused, former Homagama District Judge Sunil Abeysinghe and his personal security officer, Police Constable Mahinda Kithsiri were arrested while soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs.300,000 on May, 2013 from a person in the Hanwella area to deliver a favorable verdict in a case that was being heard before his court.

They were arrested by officers attached to the Bribery Commission while accepting a sum of Rs.300, 000 as a bribe. Delivering the verdict following a lengthy trial, High Court Judge Adithya Patabendi observed that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubts. Thereafter, the accused were sentenced to 16 years Rigorous Imprisonment and also ordered them to pay a fine of Rs.20,000 each.

Furthermore, they were ordered to pay another Rs.300,000 as a penalty to recover the amount they accepted as a bribe. The Bribery Commission had filed indictments against the accused based on a complaint made by a woman, a resident of Embulgama, Homagama.
