Wilpattu reserve deforestation case judgement on April 3

The writ petition filed by Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) seeking an order to quash the clearing of the Wilpattu National Park forest and constructing housing settlements adjoining the National Park was yesterday fixed for judgement by the Court of Appeal.

The two-judge Court of Appeal bench comprising Justice Janak de Silva and Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne fixed the petition for judgement to be delivered on April 3.

All parties including the petitioner and seventh respondent former Minister Rishad Badiuddeen had concluded their oral submissions regarding the petition and parties were directed file their written objections before March 18. The CEJ had filed this writ petition naming Forest Conservation Department Conservator General , the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), Wildlife Department Director General, Lands Commissioner General, Archeological Department Commissioner General, Mannar District Secretary, MP Rishad Badiuddeen, Environment and Mahaweli Development Minister and the Attorney General as respondents.
