‘Elephant’ or ‘Swan’ to be decided today

The UNP-led alliance will decide between the ‘Elephant’ and ‘Swan’ symbol for the General Election after a scrutiny of the relevant legal parameters by the working committee today (19), MP Range Bandara said yesterday.

Addressing a news conference at the Sirikotha, Bandara said a majority favoured the Elephant symbol. “We used the ‘Swan’ only when a Common candidate came forward at the Presidential Elections. The ‘Heart’ symbol cannot be used due to legal reasons and the party registration deadline has anyway passed,” he added.

Once the symbol is finalised, the nominee for the General Secretary’s post will also be considered, he said.

“The General Secretary of the party is anyway Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara’s name is likely to be approved by the working committee today (19). It is still pending.

The alliance must go forward with a mixture of young and matured representation and with the support of women,” he added.

He said that nominations to clergy will not be given through the UNP-led alliance as the UNP paid respect to clergy and their dignity. He said that the coalition will join with several parties that are already in parliament and some other parties which are not currently functioning in the parliament too.

He also condemned former President Maithripala Sirisena becoming chairman of the Sri Lanka Nidahas Podujana Sandanaya and recalled that justice will not be served to the Catholics through this government.
