Dambulla forest conservation officials held seven suspects, while they were cutting a road that is running about 2 km through the Wewalawewa Forest Reserve, Kuratiyaya.

A backhoe, tractor and several set of equipment were seized.

They were digging gravel with the backhoe when they were arrested.

While the officers were taking the suspects, several people obstructed them and allowed one suspect to escape, the officials said.

The officers said the Agriculture Department has allegedly given the suspects the contract without a prior approval from the Forest Conservation Department.

A complaint has been lodged in the Dambulla Police in this regard, Beat Officer I.M.Dayarathna said.
