SLPP, SLFP form new alliance to contest general election

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday handed over the documents to the Election Commission to register a new political alliance named ‘Sri Lanka Nidahas Podujana Sandanaya’ to contest the upcoming General Elections.

SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara and SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, speaking to the media outside the Election Commission premises after submitting the documents, said the Leader of the new alliance would be SLPP Leader and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Chairman would be SLFP Leader and former President Maithripala Sirisena.

They said the new alliance comprising of nine political parties would contest the upcoming General Elections from the ‘Flower Bud’ symbol of the SLPP.

Former MP and SLPP National Organizer Basil Rajapaksa has been proposed as the General Secretary of the new alliance, while UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera has been proposed as the Deputy General Secretary.

Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) Leader and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has been proposed as the Deputy Chairman, while the names of Wimal Weerawansa and Dayasiri Jayasekara have been proposed as National Organizers of the new alliance.

The names of Tissa Vitarana, Vasudeva Nanayakkara and DEW Gunasekara have been proposed as Vice Chairmen of the new alliance, while Udaya Gammanpila has been proposed as a Vice Secretary.

“All parties of the new alliance work in unity and through understanding for a landslide victory at the next General Elections,” said Attorney-at-Law Kariyawasam.

State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said the new alliance would be led by the SLPP, and that the SLFP would be the second major party in it.

Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya previously announced that yesterday was the last day to register new political parties for the forthcoming General Elections.
