Over 40,000 quack doctors in Sri Lanka - GMOA

Sri Lanka is estimated to have over 40,000 quack doctors, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said. Addressing a press conference held at the GMOA Head Quarters in Colombo yesterday evening. He said that although the number of quack doctors increased rapidly during the past five years, former Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne purposely ignored the issue and did not take any action.

Dr. Aluthge pointed out that the Health Ministry should open a special centre which operates during 24 hours and seven days of the week to accept complaints against quack doctors and gather information of them. The telephone number of this centre should be given a wide publicity in order to educate the people.

All citizens of Sri Lanka should be able to check the registration and qualification of their family/any other doctor via a shot message service (SMS). They should know about them before obtaining medical treatment from them. The fine for a quack doctor should be increased up to Rs. 100,000 and it should be included five years of imprisonment, he added.
