SLC acknowledges Weeraratna’s recognition for DRS

Sri Lankan lawyer Senaka Weeraratna’s battle for due recognition as the author of the Decision Review System (DRS) to minimize umpiring errors in the middle as far back as 1997, has met with some success with Sri Lanka Cricket eventually acknowledging his concept.

Weeraratna’s suggestion was tabled and minuted at the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket this week, thus giving him an impetus to push forward his case which he has been fighting for over 20 years with requests and appeals to both Sri Lanka Cricket and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Weeraratna has been fighting for the acknowledgement that Duckworth and Lewis got for their contribution towards deciding the result of rain-affected matches in One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 internationals. Ashley de Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket said that they had on an earlier occasion submitted documents pertaining to Weeraratna’s claims to the ICC but nothing had come out of it.

“Now that SLC has taken the matter up at the ExCo we will forward whatever documents that Weeraratna submits to the ICC again and let them take a final decision on it,” said De Silva. In his quest for recognition Weeraratne has also appealed to former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara who today holds the exalted post as president of the MCC.
