Re-settlers under the Moragahakanda-Kaluganga Reservoir Project in Matale lament that they have not received the basic facilities so far to continue their livelihoods.

Over 3,000 families have been evacuated from their villages after they were acquired for the project and the families were resettled about six years ago. But the management failed to provide them with even basic facilities so far.

All-island Farmer Federation National Organiser Namal Karunaratna and the representatives of laggala-Moragahakanda Public Rights Protective Organization met Project Director D.B. Wjeratna on Wednesday (13) and handed over a letter in this regard.

Namal Karunaratna said the management had promised them at the beginning to provide the facilities but it is yet to happen.

D.B.Wijeratna said the re-settlers along the left bank of the Kaluganga Project can have water for farming from May but the constructions of the right bank have been halted now by the authorities.

“The management will make a decision in this regard before long. Meanwhile, we can continue with the work of the right bank,” he said.
