University College to be set up for media

The Government plans to establish a University College affiliated to the University Grants Commission (UGC) with the aim of creating an advanced media culture, said Information and Media, Higher Education, Technology and innovations Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardena.

The Minister said that it would be decided later if this University College would be affiliated to the Colombo University or the Kelaniya University.

He was speaking during a meeting held with Media Heads at the Government Information Department yesterday, aimed at providing concessions to media personnel and implementing the Government’s media policy.

Minister Dr.Gunawardena said that through this initiative a media culture would be established to meet the modern standards and certificates would be awarded under three categories as certificate, diploma and higher diploma.

The Minister said those following a one year course would be awarded a certificate, two year course a diploma and those following a three year course would be awarded a higher diploma. In addition, the minister also noted that journalists could also further their qualifications subsequent to following these courses and read for their degrees and post graduate degrees thereafter.
