Concessionary loan scheme for journalists proposed

The Government is to initiate the proposal to introduce a concessionary loan scheme for journalists to purchase houses and vehicles, Information and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said yesterday.

“The Government has taken the decision as part of fulfilling President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s “Saubhagyaye Dekma” policy manifesto,” Minister Dr. Gunawardena observed.

The Minister was speaking at a meeting with the Heads of Media institutes concerning the welfare of journalists held at the Media Ministry yesterday.

Minister Dr. Gunawardena pointed out that if the Government succeeds in taking over the housing scheme near the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Grounds at Diyagama in Homagama, they can successfully provide a concessionary loan scheme to give those houses for the journalists.

The Minister said there are 800 houses in the said housing scheme and they could be sold at a low price of Rs. 5 million.

He also said that it has been planned to sell the scheme to a private company. However, the Government is considering the possibility of taking over the housing scheme.

“If this plan becomes a reality, the Government could easily give those houses to the journalists,” Minister Dr. Gunawardena said.
