Not seized any mangrove land for playground - State Minister S.N.Perera

State Minister of Fisheries and Inland Fisheries Industry Sanath Nishantha Perera yesterday told the Daily News that he neither attempted the seizure nor release of any mangrove land belonging to the Forestry Department to construct any playground for some school children in Negombo.

He said responding to questions posed by us about a video going viral on social media in which the minister was seen under heavy flak by a female Assistant Forest Conservator for what seemed to be such an attempt by the minister and a group of people advocating that action.

The minister said it was supposed to be a discussion.

Unfortunately, it turned into a heated argument between the villagers who were present and the Sri Lanka Forest Department officer concerned.

The Forest conservator identified as Devanee Jayatilleke, maintained that the land area in question is owned by the Sri Lanka Forest Department and it cannot be handed for any playground construction activity just because some villagers wanted it.

Meanwhile, Environment and Wildlife Resources and Minister of Lands and Land Development Minister S. M. Chandrasena yesterday said that the Forest Department Officer attached to his ministry in this incident has apprised the State Minister of Fisheries and Inland Fisheries Industry Sanath Nishantha Perera of the situation with respect to the land that was talked about as it belonged to the Sri Lanka Forest Department.
