Civil society played major role in President’s victory - SLFP Spokesman

Civil society played a pivotal role during the Presidential election period which resulted in a significant victory for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, SLFP Spokesman MP Weerakumara Dissanayake said.

He was addressing the media at the SLFP headquarters in Colombo yesterday.

“No matter what the politicians may say, no one could have won the Presidential election without the momentum created with the assistance of civil society.

The SLPP and SLFP should understand this ground reality,” he said.

He said that these people’s movements guided the public towards a common platform to “Build the Country”.

He further added that the United National Party (UNP) is facing an internal crisis and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the SLFP should be aware of this,” he said. Dissanayake accused the UNP of being behind most of the protests and agitations taking place in the country today.

Speaking on current issues, he said that farmers are affected by the fertilizer scarcity.

“The government is duty bound to address these issues,” he said. Dissanayake said there should be a proper and systematic mechanism to reduce congestion in prisons.

It has been revealed that a significant number of prisoners are doing time for minor issues.
