To tackle issues surrounding institutions under Industrial Export Ministry:

Ranatunga calls for Special Investigations Unit

A Special Investigations Unit will be set up to investigate complaints received against institutions coming under the purview of the Industrial Export, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation Ministry. This follows a directive issued by Minister Prasanna Ranatunga to his Ministry Secretary, recently.

A media statement issued by the Ministry said that there are 8 institutions coming under the Ministry's purview. They are Airport and Aviation Services Ltd., Sri Lankan Airways, the Civil Aviation Authority, Tourism Development Authority, Tourist Hotel Management Training Institute, Sri Lanka Conference Bureau, and the Export Development Board. Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has said he had received many complaints regarding inconveniences caused to the public regarding functions and services carried out by these institutions. Apart from this, he had received complaints regarding the inner workings of these institutions.

Therefore, there is an urgent need to probe these complaints and take urgent corrective steps, the statement said.

The new investigations unit will have the authority to probe complaints regarding problems faced by air passengers at airports, as well as the intimidation of tourists, problems faced inside Sri Lankan planes, and problems faced by investors and those within Free Trade Zones.
