With a view to promoting the propagation of freshwater fish, the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries of the Batticaloa District conducted the second harvesting ceremony on Tuesday (11) at Puthukkudiyiruppu in the Manmunai Pattu Secretariat Division.

Under the Provincial Specific Development Grant (PSDG), the Department is promoting freshwater fish-growing farmers in the Batticaloa District to support them to earn a living.

The event was held under the guidance of the Provincial Director Fisheries and Aquaculture Eastern Province S. Suthagaran. Nearly a quarter of a one-acre freshwater fish tank in Puthukkudiyiruppu has been utilised since January 2019.

Under the first step of the PSDG scheme, nearly 4,000 Thilappiya hatchlings were donated to the Kadukkamunai community-based fish cultivating center. About 1,840 kg of fish was sold at Rs. 350 per kilogramme. Batticaloa District Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries District Officer L. Partheepan and Aquaculture Development Officer N. Nerthirajan were present at the harvesting ceremony.
