Hoof and mouth disease affects cattle in NWP

Some 100,000 cattle in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts have been infected with hoof and mouth disease, Kurunegala district senior Divisional Secretary W.E. Jayathilake said.

Speaking at a meeting with dairy farmers of the Kurunegala district in Bingiriya yesterday, he said the milk production in the North Western Province has come down by 35 percent due to this reason.

“This disease is now spreading to cattle in the North Central Province too. About 89 milch cows have died of this disease. Over 5,500 dairy farmers in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts have been affected as a result,” he said.

“The dairy farmers who got about 40 and 50 litres per day are now getting only three to four litres of milk per day.

Early steps have to be taken by the relevant government authorities to help these dairy farmers.”
