'Quake off southeast coast felt in Sri Lanka

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) announced yesterday that an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka at around 2.34 am yesterday. The depth of the earthquake was 10km.

People in Galle, Matara and Colombo had felt the earthquake, the Disaster Management Centre Assistant Director (Media and Public Relations) Janaka Handunpathiraja said.

He however said that no damage to property was reported due to the quake.

Handunpathiraja said the DMC and the Meteorological Department were on alert for possible aftershocks of the earthquake. As at yesterday noon, no aftershocks were reported.

Issuing an Earthquake Information Bulletin at 5.00am, the Meteorological Department said that there was no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka from the earthquake, and that the coastal areas were safe.
