6,259 Tri-Service absentees, deserters surender

A total of 6,259 Tri-Service absentees and deserters had surrendered to their respective units during the general amnesty declared by the President for a period of seven days concurrent to the 72nd Independence Day commencing from February 5.

4,528 Army absentees and deserters had surrendered from February 5 to 10, while 707 Navy and 1,024 Air Force deserters and absentees had also surrendered. Among them were six officers from the Army and seven officers from the Air Force.

The Defence Ministry said this measure had been taken to provide an opportunity for Tri-Forces personnel who had served the nation under difficult circumstances facing numerous hardships and had left their respective services without following proper procedures.This general amnesty is offered only to Tri-Forces absentees and who have been marked absent without leave (AWOL) before September 30, 2019.

A grace period to handover illegal firearms held without valid permits or documents had also been announced from February 5 to 12 by the Defence Ministry.

The Defence Ministry had requested those who are in possession of illegal or unregistered firearms to hand them over to the nearest police station during the amnesty period.Police have been instructed to take legal action against those who fail to handover unauthorized weapons to the Police during the amnesty. This decision has been taken to ensure public safety and curb threats posed by such weapons.

The Defence Ministry had taken this step in order to prevent the circulation of illegal firearms within the country which has resulted in many atrocities. Therefore, the Defence Ministry also requests the public to notify the police if they have any information regarding anyone in possession of an illegal firearm after the amnesty period.
