Jampettah shooting: CCD makes first arrest

The Colombo Crimes Division has arrested one of two persons suspected to have carried out the shooting that claimed the life of a man on Jampettah Street last Saturday. The individual in question was taken into custody in Peliyagoda on Monday, around 5:20 p.m. He is a 31-year-old resident of Hettipola, Kurunegala. CCD officials also seized a homemade handgun, two 9-millimetre ammunition rounds, and a mobile phone that the suspect had on his person. He was to be produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate, yesterday.

Held over drug possession

Nugegoda Police arrested a person possessing 4.8 grams of heroin in Makumbura, Kottawa, on Monday.

The suspect is a 50-year-old resident of Devinuwara. He is said to have broken out of the Welikada Prison in 2017 while serving a life sentence over another drug case.

Police have seized two cars and seven mobile phones that were in his possession. He was produced at the Homagama Magistrate’s Court in Monday, where he was ordered to be remanded for another week.

Investigations are continuing.

Brothel raid: two arrested

Mt. Lavinia Police arrested two suspects in a brothel raid on Sylvester Road, on Monday. The establishment has been functioning under the guise of an Ayurvedic spa.

The suspects are of the ages 39 and 22, and are residents of Ambalangoda and Galle. They were to be produced before the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate, yesterday.
