The Domestic Workers’ Union (DWU) and the Labour Relations Ministry recently held discussions on the strengthening of domestic workers’ rights based on a legal draft that was submitted in 2018.

“State officials have been instructed to safeguard domestic workers’ rights, and Cabinet has approved this proposal. The draft asks domestic workers’ rights to be brought under the EPF Act, ETF Act, Gratuity Act, and Maternity Benefits Ordinance,” they added.

Labour Relations Ministry Secretary Sarath Abeygunawardena said that Cabinet papers passed under the previous government had been under review while the country’s domestic workers were facing numerous hardships without proper legal protection.

He pledged that the Labour Relations Ministry will take the necessary steps to strengthen domestic workers’ rights by the month’s end.
