Rishad defends corruption allegations

MP Rishad Bathiudeen, defending allegations levelled against him by Minister Wimal Weerawansa yesterday, challenged the latter to show that he had remitted even a dollar to a bank account in the US, as opposed to the $100,000 that was said to have been credited.

Bathiudeen also said that his party did not decide whether or not to support Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, or the United National Party, or its promised alliance, in the upcoming General Election.

He was speaking to the media at a press conference held at his residence in Colombo 7.

The MP said that he had taken steps to send a Letter of Demand to Minister Weerawansa, asking Rs.10 million to be paid for the various statements he had made which he said were ‘injurious’ to his character.

The former minister also denied that he had bought any property for himself under various names during his ministerial tenure.

Small and Medium Business & Enterprise Development Minister Wimal Weerawansa, on Monday, called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate 227 deeds he alleged as questionable, which he said was found during a raid at Bathiudeen’s private residence.
