On the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, a proper mechanism is in place to purchase the harvest of 2019/20 Maha cultivation season, Information and Communication Technology State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said.

Addressing the media at the Information and Communication Technology Ministry yesterday, State Minister Abeywardena said that the harvesting of the Maha season has already begun in the Ampara, Moneragala, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa districts with the assistance of the Army.

The Government, in line with the President’s Vision of Prosperity policy, has already commenced purchasing paddy at a minimum guaranteed price of Rs. 50 per kilogramme under the Government’s programme to purchase the paddy harvest of the Maha season 2019/2020.

As per the instructions given by the President, a decision was taken to provide an opportunity to small and medium-scale mill owners to purchase wet paddy and resell it via district and divisional secretaries with the intention of uplifting their living standards.

“With the intervention of the government, state banks including the People’s Bank, Bank of Ceylon and Regional Development Bank have agreed to provide loans at an interest rate of eight percent for these rice mill owners,” said the State Minister.

The maximum amount of paddy that can be purchased from a farmer according to the acreage cultivated has also been increased as up to one acre – 1,000 kg, one to three acres – 3,000kg and three to five acres – 5,000 kg.

He further said that the government is ready to purchase paddy by even exceeding this limit.
