Attorney General tells Acting IGP:

‘Immediately’ try Judge Pilapitiya in Nugegoda courts

Demands explanation for delay by Police :

The Attorney General has directed the acting Inspector General (IGP) to ‘immediately’ take necessary legal action against interdicted High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya in the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court.

Attorney General’s Coordinating Officer, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne told news media that after considering the Ranjan Ramanayaka phone recording reports which were obtained from the relevant companies by Colombo Crime Division (CCD), the Attorney General had observed that the legal action against the suspects can be instituted within the jurisdiction of Colombo and Nugegoda courts.

The Attorney General had further observed that since two ongoing cases against the first suspect Ranjan Ramanayake over the controversial phone calls were being held in the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court, it was appropriate to take legal action against interdicted High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya also at Nugegoda Magistrate’s court.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General has expressed his displeasure over the conduct of the acting IGP for non-compliance with his advice to invoke the judicial process in interdicted High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya’s case.

Previously, the Attorney General had instructed the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) Director to obtain a warrant and arrest Judge Pilapitiya and produce him before the relevant Magistrate’s court for conspiring to fabricate false evidence along with MP Ranjan Ramanayake.

On the same day, the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana Wickramaratne appointed a five-member committee to study the abstracts of the investigation into interdicted Judge Gihan Pilapitya and make recommendations on the Attorney General’s instructions to arrest Judge Pilapitiya.

The AG had directed acting IGP Chandana Wickramaratne to submit a report before Monday (10th) regarding further legal action in the case and submit an explanation with regard to non-compliance with his advice to rely primarily on the judicial process regarding interdicted judge Gihan Pilapitiya’s warrant.

The acting IGP had submitted his explanations and stated that he was unable to find out the relevant jurisdiction to take legal action against Judge Pilapitiya. Embilipitiya High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya was recently interdicted over the controversial phone conversation he had with UNP MP Ranjan Ramanayake.
