Muthuhettigama hints at moving to SLPP

There are internal disputes in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as there are in the United National Party (UNP). However, we shall overcome all such challenges and register a two-thirds majority at the next parliamentary election by joining hands with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Galle District United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP Nishantha Muthuhettigama said.

He was addressing a media briefing on the current political situation, at his office in Galle on Saturday.

“I was victorious at the 2009 Provincial Council Elections defeating politicians such as Anarakli and Sajin De Vaas Gunawardena. Today people cannot even trace the whereabouts of those candidates who contested the previous elections. If the leadership attempts to bring in such candidates who have no connection with the district at the next general election, we will fight against such a move with the support of the people of Galle,” Muthuhettigama said.

In response to questions raised by the media, the Galle District MP asserted that he was the only UPFA Parliamentarian in the district and he would secure his seat with no difficulty despite the fact that a number of popular actors and cricketers are reportedly listed to contest the next election.

“At present neither the SLFP nor UNP is the major party in the country. The major political movement of the country today is the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the victorious symbol is the lotus bud. If I am not given the due place and recognition in the SLFP, I shall move into the shelter of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa,” Muthuhettigama said.

“The SLFP’s contribution at the previous Presidential Election was decisive. Its support largely contributed towards the resounding victory of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. We have to be united and should strive to register an extraordinary election victory at the next parliamentary election. Today, the UNP has been broken into numerous factions. In future, they will not be able to secure even four million votes,” the UPFA MP said. “I wish that Mahinda Rajapaksa will obtain the leadership of the SLFP again. If the SLFP deserts us, we will seek political protection under Mahinda Rajapaksa,” he said.
