The road rehabilitation work has been standstill for months now.

Rehabilitation work of the Taldena-Galgelanda Road in the Meegahakiula Pradesheeya Sabha (PB), which commenced during the previous regime under the I-Road Development Project, has been stopped for about six months causing great difficulties to even pedestrians, residents of the area said.

They said the road was prepared to be carpeted after breaking it, which was earlier in a good condition. Now about 1,000 families including schoolchildren undergo great difficulties since they do not have any other road to reach their destinations by vehicles or on foot.

Rs. 64.5 million has been allocated for the rehabilitation work, the residents said.

The concrete slabs laid along the road, bridges and culverts have been removed for the rehabilitation work and the drainage system, too, has been disrupted with the construction work, they said. Meegahakiula PS Chairman Lalith Jayawardena said that not only this road, but also many other roads in the area have been under construction now. These rehabilitation projects commenced without the approval of the PS, he said. “We informed the relevant authorities of the Road Development Authority and contractors about this lamentable situation, but they have not taken any steps to rectify the situation. We will take legal steps against them if they do not act immediately in this regard,” he said.
