The Chairman of the Chamber of Small Industries Rohan de Silva expressed jubilation at the Government recognizing the importance of the Small and Medium Enterprise Sector but expressed sector issues which were impediments towards the development of the industry.

“We are thrilled that the government, especially President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Minister of Industrial Exports, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation Prasanna Ranatunga have both recognized the value of the sector as it contributes 70% to the economy,” Chairman of the Chamber of Small Industries, Rohan de Silva told Daily News Finance yesterday.

He said that he was willing to take the challenge of both President Rajapaksa and Minister Ranatunga of making the SME sector the growth hub of the economy , but said that the drawbacks to taking up these challenges were the heavy cost of imported raw materials, cost of labour, the absence of skilled labour and insufficient the recognition of the Industrial Excellence which was held annually.

He also said that there was a large cost associated with the imported raw materials which went into the finished product of local SME products and therefore, the reduction of those import taxes which prevented the growth of these product sectors.

The other issue was with the absence of trained skilled labour where they should be graded so that that could have been one of the criteria that foreign investors would have looked for and could have been satisfied with, he said. The Government should also have a large number of training institutions for carpenters, masons, electricians, plumbers etc and other such skilled labour and also have a grading system for them so that the more there are available numbers of trained personnel, they will be available at cheaper and competitive rates.

He also proposed that the Government should establish such training facilities at regional and at district level.
