Kandy will tackle Army today at Welisara

Kandy Sports Club the defending league champions who are unbeaten this season and who are dominating the league, will be at Welisara to play Army SC, whom they beat at Nittawela in the first round. Kandy SC has a good flare, they're a team on the rise, and everything they do is in good form and due to the player’s good work. In the first round game played at Nittawela beat the Soldiers by 64 points to 19.Kandy Sc is a well organized team and never squandered possession as they always endeavored to put it to good use. They play to a plan and pattern and every player knows his job and that is what separated them from the rest of the teams. There are no doubts that if Kandy SC continues in this form are sure to overpower the Soldiers today. At present Kandy SC is on top they have over powered every team they met. The players who work very hard, are sure to continue their good work, they have a great team. Many of the top players are from Kandy and Colombo schools.They learn the game at high level at school when they pick up the rugby ball they know what to do.. Reshan sportsman of the year at Trinity

Sportsman of the year award was presented to Reshan Bandaranayake at the annual prize giving of Trinity College,yesterday Friday at the school hall, The prestigious Ryde Gold Medal for the best all round student was pinned for the first time to a karate sportsmen S. Trinity are enjoying good cricket Trinity College cricket team enjoy good season in this inter-school cricket season, Trinity College with eight wins in ten games are a force to be reckoned with. This school is one of the oldest cricket playing schools in the country. Before the Second World War they not only produced several top class cricketers but also produced several invincible teams. Trinity who took to the game in 1893, in three years time their cricket flourished winning three, drawing two and losing one. There first school match was against Royal College in 1893, the next was against S. Thomas’ College in1898, same year they played Ananda College, Wesley College in 1903, St.Joseph's College in 1908, St Anthony's College in 1914, St. Benedict's College in 1915, Zahira College in 1928 and later with schools like Dharmaraja College,St. .Peter's College, Kingswood College. This season under the guidance of a reputed coach Kavind Jayasuriya are brimming with confidence to be a force in the school arena. They have beaten St. Servatius, St. Joseph Vaz, Richmond, Lumbini, Zahira, Nalanda, St.Sebastian’s, Ananda and drawn with Wesley, St. Thomas Matara, St. Joseph’s, rest of the matches are with Mahanama, St.Peters, S. Thomas’ Mount, Royal and the big match with St. Anthony’s.

Kandy schools “A” division first matches

Now it’s time for schools rugby, which is one of the most looked sporting event, the kickoff is set form 4th of March. A total of 92 schools will be seen in action in three different divisions in the 3 month long league tournament. The Division ‘A’ will consist of 12 schools divided into 2 groups and ranked according to their standings from last year. The Kandy schools in that group are Division I ‘A’ are Trinity College, Kingswood College and St.Anthony’s College and in the Division II‘A’ are Vidyartha College and Dharmaraja College. These three school St.Sylvester’s College, Sri Rahula College and Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College are in the lower division. The “A”division first games are March 4th Dharmaraja College will be in Bambalapitya to play St. Peters’ College, on 5th Kingswood College will play St. Joseph’s College at Havelock Park, 6th Vidyartha College will play Wesley College at Longden Place and on same day at Pallekelle Trinity College will host S. Thomas College the winners will be presented the Canon de Saram trophy’ Though the Trinity –Thomian rugby encounteris now played for the 64th year, with no fixture in year 1971, the Canon deSaram trophy is played for the 43rd year and on 7th St .Anthony’s College will play Royal College at Nittawela.

Kandy Gateway – Netball and Football tournament

Kandy Gateway College who are celebrating their 20th year with a sporting event and in the Basketball event, their boys and girls basketball teams gave a good display on Monday. The boy’s teams were able to beat St. Sylvester’s College by 58 points to 26 to win the Asoka Hearth-Ranil Meetiyagoda trophy and in the Girls invitation game the host beat Hillwood College 29-16. On Thursday in Netball Hillwood College beat Gateway College Kandy and were awarded the Rohini Alles /Somakkumari Samarasinghe trophy. Then in the invitation netball game Girls High school beat gateway College Colombo. In the Football game Gateway College Kandy beat Trinity College 2-1- to win the Ireland Jo0pnes trophy.

Trinity Central Boarding House athletics champions

The annual Inter-HouseAthletic meet was held on 31st at the Asgiriya Stadium, which was held under the distinguished patronage of athletics and cadetting lion winner Hemantah Perera. It was a well organized event, where Central Boarding House emerged as champions with 327 points, Simthraarchchi House (296), Garrett (284),Orloff (282) and Lemuel (184) took the slotsfrom two to five.

Hillwood inter house sports meet

The annual inter house sports meet of Hillwood College will take placeon 14th at the Asgiriya Stadium, which one of the most looked forward sporting event of the 1889 founded Hillwood College, which is one of the well recognized private girl’s schools.

Kandy’s football veterans all out to revive the game

Football was at onetime the most popular sport, known as the common man's game. It has sadly taken a back seat in the recent past. Kandy was once a power house of Sri Lanka club football. But today it is in a forgotten state. The game is sadly neglected.For many years, tournaments and AGM’s have not been held. The FFSL is not showing any interest in Kandy football. It is time they woke from their deep slumber and started to move the game of football in Kandy towards the right direction. Schools continue their football thanks to the school authorities.

Kingswood road race

The annual road race for the inter house sports meet 2020 of Kingwood College was held on Friday 24th January. The course was 12km long, where a good set of young Kingswoodians were seen in action and Harrow house won the overall championship.

A big hand to Mahanuwara YMBA

Today over here in Kandy only Mahanuwara YMBA keep the cue table lights on. Over here Billiards and Snooker has taken a nosedive in Kandy. There are no tournaments as in the early days. In the past there were Inter-club matches, but now it has deteriorated. In the early days,Kings Cue Club earned a name in this sport, Catholic Club at one time gave their best but now the club is no more, Lawn Club too is no more, Public Services Club members use the cue on and off, Mahanuwara YMBA is the only place where the game is promoted. Kandy YMMA, the founder members of Sri Lanka Billiards and Snooker Association who dominated cue sports at one time are all-out to bring back the game.

Kingswoodian scout Udayantha no more

Udayantha Devinda a 20 year old, one of the best scout and school prefect of Kingswood College passed away. and his funeral took place at the Mahiyawa general cemetery.

Kandy YMMA to bring back billiards

The long standing president and one time a top cueist A.S.M. Gazally is all-out to bring back the billiard sport to the former position. Kandy YMMA was one of the founders of the Billiards and Snooker Association. At one time the YMMA dominated the sport, and good old days they had some of the finest cueists like A.M.A. Azeez, T.B. Jaya, ACM Faleel, HM Marikar, Shaeed Ismail, M. Arifin, Mamu Islmail, MP Saheed, A.M.I.N. Marikar, M. Ashkeen, Cpt. M. Farook, M. Shafeek, ACM Kaleel, Abul Razak, Mohideen Sha, ASM Naufel a some of the old members who kep tthe Billiards game going. Billiards has a long and rich history stretching from its inception in the 15th century; to the wrapping of the body of Mary, Queen of Scots in her billiard table cover in 1586; through its many mentions in the works of Shakespeare, including the famous line “let's to billiards”in Antony and Cleopatra (1606–07); to the dome on Thomas Jefferson's home Monticello, which conceals a billiard room he hid, as billiards was illegal inVirginia at that time; and through the many famous enthusiasts of the sport including, Mozart, Louis XIV of France, Marie Antoinette, Immanuel Kant,Napoleon, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, George Washington, French president JulesGrévy, Charles Dickens, George Armstrong Custer, Theodore Roosevelt, LewisCarroll, W.C. Fields, Babe Ruth, Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, and many others.

Mahanuwara YMBA annual TT, badminton and swimming

Mahanuara YMBA’s annual under 15 Table Tennis and Badminton will take place on 22nd at the Municipal Council indoor stadium at Katukelle and on 29th will be the swimming meet at the Mahamaya Girls College pool. This is one of the most looked forward and well organized sporting events over here in the hills. The man who is handing it is the veteran of Mahanuwara YMBA sports Secretary Cyril Zoysa who gave a big hand for sports for years. AndYMBA has been giving a hand for sports for years.

Old Vidyartha TT playerUdaya shines VidyarthaCollege product Udaya Ranasinghe who representing Old Vidyartha TT club was adjudged the most outstanding table tennis player in the men’s event at the 73rd National Table tennis event 2019 held at S.Thomas’ College indoor stadium at Mount. Udaya was the men’s singles champion and also won the mixed doubles paring of with Hillwood Girls College Bimandi Bandara and also won the men’sdoubles patterning N. Jaysinghe.

Tarinda highest scorer Old Trinitian Tharinda Ratwatte who is playing for Kandy SC is the present highest rugby inter club scorer ,he has scored 78 points in nine games, though it is nine games in the first few games he didn’t kick at goal it was after Thilina Wijesighe had to be side lined he took over kicking .. Tharinda son of famous scrum half Ashan Ratwatte led Trintiy College and later played for CR and FC and this season for Kandy SC.

Kingswood rugby in for better times

The Kingswood College rugby team is all out to improve this season under one of their products Nilufer Ibrahim. It was they when they were known as Boys Highschool first played rugger and the first inter school game was in 1906 against Trintiy College after few years they gave up and later stated in 1980’s and have given their best. According to news under their product and former coach Nilufer Ibrahim, who is a good man in coaching, are sure to performwell. After hanging up his boots, he took up coaching in 2007. In 2008 he coached Kingswood College to a league title. He has coached Kandy SC, Isipathana College,St. Josephs College, at club level Army, Navy and CR & FC. Theirfirst game will be against St. Josephs’ College on 5th of March in Colombo. This season the side will be led by fly half Asiri Senavirathne who has a good knowledge of the game and this is going to be his third year and his side is blessed with some top players.

Hillwood’s Binmandi in World Cup TT team

A five member women’s table tennis team has been picked to take part in the World Table Tennis Championship, which is to played in South Korea from 22nd to 29th of the coming month. Out of the five players one is from Kandy, that is Kandy Hillwood College Bimandi Bandara, who has made Kandy proud and she is sure to do well and the other players are Ishara Madurani (Ports Authroity), Hansani Piymala (Navy), Herandi Warsuwitharana (Army) and JitaraWarnakulasuriya (Ladies College)
