Coronavirus: Thirteen under surveillance islandwide

As at yesterday (7), only one confirmed coronavirus patient is identified at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) and four patients who are suspected to have contracted coronavirus are currently under surveillance at the NIID.

One patient is warded at the Provincial General Hospital -Badulla, one at Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, four at the National Hospital - Kandy, one at Ragama Teaching Hospital (Colombo North) and another one at District General Hospital Negombo, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, in the current Sri Lankan context, there is no scientific justification to wear face masks by the public including children, routinely. The only positive case found was a Chinese tourist and now she is in good health. The 33 students who were in Wuhan city, are now in good health at Diyathalawa Army Base where quarantine activities are being conducted. Twelve (12) hospitals around the country have been identified as treatment centers for the suspected persons.

They are NIID, Teaching Hospital (TH) Ragama, DGH Gampaha, DGH Negombo, National Hospital Kandy, TH Karapitiya, TH Anuradhapura, TH Jaffna, TH Kurunegala, PGH Rathnapura, TH Batticoloa, PGH Badulla, he said.

“Returning Sri Lankan students (also those who visited China due to other purposes during the last 14 days) are advised to stay in their homes with minimal contacts with others for a period of two weeks from the day of arrival to Sri Lanka,” he added.
