Temple Tusker not harmed - Bellanwila Nayake thera

The Chief Incumbent of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara, Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Dhammaratana Nayaka thera told the media yesterday that he will accept any challenge posed by anyone who claims their temple's young tusker, Myan Kumara, has been harmed.

"No-one under our supervision has harmed or ever will hurt this Eth Petiya (young tusker)," he stated categorically.

Ven. Dr, Dhammaratana Nayaka thera was addressing a press conference at the Bellanwila Temple. The thera said he decided to hold the press briefing to explain to the the public on the half truths spreading on social media alluding that the young tusker of the temple is being abused by its guardians over a video uploaded to social media.

I studied the situation and it came to my notice that a group of people who do not understand anything about elephant care, and two local women with vested interest were behind all this.

"Now, in the video, it shows that the animal was hit twice with a cane in the leg.Sometimes, young elephants don't listen to mahouts, especially when they're in the water. So they had to be straightened up, as some mothers would have done to some stubborn children. In this case, not even an elephant goad was used to hit the animal, "he said.

"I ask those who say that we harm the animal to come and see how we take care of it before criticizing us for some uploaded video clips on social media, and for foolish and misleading comments that certain groups with a vested interest are spreading all over the place to destroy our age-old traditions," he said.

The temple’s Vihara Committee Secretary Kesara Lal Gunasekara and Esala Perahera Committee Treasurer Ruban Wickremarachchi were present.
