Divisional Secretariat for Kalmunai North, Urban Council for Saindamaradu

The Ampara Kalmunai North Divisional sub office set up to cater to the needs of the people in the East during the war period will be upgraded as a Divisional Secretariat.

A committee will be appointed to make recommendations towards this purpose. Furthermore the number of Grama Niladhari divisions in the Dehiattakandiya Divisional Secretariat division which serves 67,000 persons will be increased from 13 to 46.

The Saindamaradu area which was covered by the Kalmunai UC will also be declared as a new Urban Council area. This follows Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s instructions during discussions held with peoples representatives and state officials in the Eastern Province on February 6 afternoon.

The Prime Minister directed the Public Administration Ministry to submit a Cabinet memorandum to increase the number of Grama Niladhari Divisions in Dehiattakandiya from 13 to 46.

The Prime Minister also directed that until the delimitation of the new 46 GS divisions is carried at Dehiattakandiya be considered as 46 DS divisions in distributing government development dividends and allocations.

In consideration of the difficulties faced by people in Saindamaradu due to their area coming under the purview of the Kalmunai UC, it was also decided to declare Saindamaradu as a separate Urban Council area.

Religious dignitaries of the Saindamaradu Jumma Mosque who attended the meeting presented a special memento to the Prime Minister at this meeting. Representatives from the Eastern Province who attended the meeting requested that Oluvil harbour he declared as a fisheries harbour as earlier proposed by them and the Prime Minister assured appropriate action would be taken about it.

Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, State Ministers Wimalaweera Dissanayake, Lasantha Alagiyawanna and Mahinda Samarasinghe, MPs Angajan Ramanathan, M L A M Hisbullah, Sriyani Wijewickrema and H M M Haris, Local Government Ministry Secretary S Hettiarachchi and Eastern Province Governor Mrs. Anuradha Yahampath also participated in the discussions.
