Committee appointed to probe Feb.3 power cut

A four member Committee has been appointed by the Power and Energy Ministry to investigate into the two hour power cut imposed in certain parts of the country on February 3 without the approval of the CEB and the Ministry and submit a report before February 11.

This follows instructions given by Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera to Ministry Secretary Mrs. Wasantha Perera.

The members of the Committee are Power State Ministry Secretary Hemantha Samarakoon (Chairman), Prof. Rahula Analage, Additional Director General E.A.Ratnaseela and Sulakshana Jayawardena.

A Ministry communique said the investigations would lay emphasis on whether the power cut was in keeping with technical reasons, whether it was due to restrictions on fuel supplies to the Kerawalapitiya Power Station, actions taken by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, whether the CEB had any alternative actions and alternative measures to be taken to prevent such situations in future. It said it was compulsory for the Committee to finalise its report before February 11 and it had powers to elicit necessary information and particulars from any official in the Power and Energy Ministry peruse relevant reports and records and enter relevant power plants for the investigation.
