SriLankan Airlines Airbus deal:

Compensation to be sought from responsible parties - Minister

All measures would be taken to demand compensation from the responsible parties involved in the SriLankan Airlines Airbus deal following following legal advice, said Industrial Export and Investment Promotion and Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga in Parliament yesterday.

He made this observation yesterday in response to a query made by JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake on the Airbus trade on Thursday under Standing Order 23 (2).

Minister Ranatunga further said that SriLankan AirLines has made complaint at the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption to investigate the bribery allegations.

He added that it has already been reported that the former SriLankan CEO Kapila Chandrasena and his wife who had allegedly been involved in the matter were arrested by the CID.

In response to the query, if the government would take steps to officially obtain the reports revealed in a British court, Minister Ranatunga said official documents on the Order of the Crown Court of Britain has already been published by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) in Britain.

The Minister further said that there were allegations that some ministers of the previous Good Governance government had obtained various inducements to suppress the investigations.

He also said that the former President appointed a Commission into the incident and SriLankan AirLines officials had given statements before the Commission.

He added although a report had been submitted to the Attorney General, so far, no action has been taken against the culprits.

The Minister said the present government has created an environment where the relevant institutions could carry out an impartial investigation and take legal action against those responsible free of political influences.
