AG objects, attorney Prasanna further remanded

Attorney Ajith Prasanna was yesterday ordered to be further remanded till February 19 by the Colombo High Court for his alleged interference with the judiciary.

Colombo High Court Judge Dammika Ganepola rejected the bail application filed by Ajith Prasanna and ordered to further remand the accused following an inquiry over contemptuous statements made by attorney Ajith Prasanna criticising Judge Gihan Kulathunga regarding the judiciary at a press conference in respect of an ongoing court case filed against former Magistrate Thilina Gamage on January 12.

When the case was yesterday taken up before the High Court, Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara appearing on behalf of the Attorney General filed an indictment comprising two charges under Section 18 of the Judicature Act against attorney Ajith Prasanna over a contemptuous statement slandering the judiciary.

President’s Counsel Jayantha Weerasinghe appearing for the accused filed a bail application before court pleading that his client be released on bail.

Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara objected to the bail application and stated that the accused was holding media conferences as a hobby and insulting judges, investigators and various parties.

The Senior State Counsel said the accused had made a baseless allegation against Judge Gihan Kulathunga at a press conference on a case being heard in the High Court.

High Court Judge Dhammika Ganepola rejected the bail application filed by the defence to release Ajith Prasanna on bail and ordered he be further remanded till February 19.
